Cliff, are we set for a walk soon?

January snow

Walked around Liverpool in a flaneurial mode with New Folder on Saturday. It was great being in the city again with Billy. We go back a way to when we both worked at Liverpool Architecture and Design Trust (LADT). We had the pleasure of walking the city then and when we get the chance we meet up and flaneur. Part of these walks were part of my PhD research and ended up in my thesis.
I have to say that the city has changed greatly. We met at Tate Liverpool and I dried out after getting caught in horizontal sleet. We walked along the new waterfront to the Cruise Liner terminal and Princes Dock. We circled back took shelter in Liverpool Parish Church. Yep, rain again. Navigating the business district spotting new (to us) Liver Birds on buildings. For some reason I felt drawn to Mathew Street and no, I'm not really a Beatles fan, but Cavern Walks is a place I've not seen for a while. It was interesting seeing the tourists in action. From Mathew Street we cut through Button Street past the old Probe Records building, now a Ted Baker shop, and onto Whitechapel. Cutting through the School Lane section of Liverpool One shopping area, we paused for tea in the revamped Bluecoat Arts Centre. The city has changed. Mostly for the better...
It was a great day even the weather held.

The final public event of "Going Public" the tenth anniversary celebrations of the Edge Hill University Poetry and Poetics Research Group is being held at the University tomorrow: a reading by Cliff Yates who is launching his new collection of poems, Frank Freeman's Dancing School. The support/warm up will be members of the group, including yours truly.Tickets are £3.50 and the reading takes place at the University's Rose Theatre.

Heading to London on the 7.48 train from Liverpool to arrive at 10.20 or so, hotel to drop bags and then up to the Bestey Trotwood to the Grievous Jones Press launch. Will miss the readings but will be great to finally meet David and Melissa and remarkably, Lara. Should be a good evening. If any of you are in London, then go there.

Edge Hill University Poetry and Poetics Research Group

GOING PUBLIC ADVANCE NOTICE

This year is the tenth anniversary of the Edge Hill University Poetry and Poetics Research Group (PPRG). There are plans for a series of events to mark this occasion during autumn 2009.

There are three founder members still active in the group – Robert Sheppard, Cliff Yates and myself. Cliff has a book forthcoming from Salt, Frank Freeman’s Dancing School, which will be launched at the Rose Theatre on Wednesday 11th November. The support will come from other members of the PPRG.

There will be a series of ‘open meetings’ where members of the group will discuss their poetics. A former member of the group, Scott Thurston, will also hold an open meeting.

Robert Sheppard’s Pages will be featuring work from members past and present. There will also be a special edition of erbacce (eds. Alan Corkish and Andrew Taylor) featuring members and former members, alongside an interview with Robert Sheppard in his capacity as chairman of the group.

There will also be an event to mark the publication of Troubles Swapped for Something Fresh: Manifestos and Unmanifestos, ed. Rupert Loydell, (Salt) which features poetics by Robert Sheppard, Cliff Yates, Scott Thurston and myself alongside others such as Jackson Mac Low, Sheila E Murphy, Ira Lightman and Geoff Stevens.
